Maybe it's the way the sun turns the cliffs golden at sunset or how the rugged landscape makes every moment feel like an adventure.

Either way, if you're looking for an engagement session spot that's equal parts romantic and epic, this is it.

When Kristen and Dexter chose Smith Rock for their engagement photos, I knew we were in for a good time. Between the sweeping views, winding trails, and a few happy mishaps (like dodging a curious chipmunks or chasing the last bit of golden light), their session was full of laughter, love, and plenty of breathtaking scenery.

Why Smith Rock is the Perfect Engagement Photo Location

Smith Rock isn’t just stunning—it’s legendary. Known as the birthplace of U.S. sport climbing, this park draws adventurers from around the world with its towering cliffs and dramatic rock formations. But you don’t need to be a climber to appreciate its beauty! With sweeping desert landscapes, winding trails, and golden light that hits just right at sunrise and sunset, it’s a dream spot for an engagement session.

One of the park’s most famous formations is Monkey Face, a 350-foot rock pillar that (if you squint just right) actually looks like a monkey. While we didn’t climb it during this session (because, well… cameras and climbing don’t mix), we did take advantage of the breathtaking views nearby!

Another reason Smith Rock is perfect for engagement photos? The weather. Unlike some of Oregon, which can be rainy and unpredictable, Smith Rock enjoys a high desert climate with lots of sunshine year-round. That means fewer reschedules and more golden light for dreamy photos.

And let’s not forget the wildlife! While exploring, you might spot golden eagles, prairie falcons, and even a curious squirrel or two (who may or may not try to crash your session).

Tips for your session:

What to Wear for a Smith Rock Engagement Session

• Neutral and earthy tones to complement the landscape.

• Flowy dresses for movement, comfortable hiking-friendly outfits.

• In the cooler months layering will be your friend, ladies I would highly recommend bringing a cardigan or some sort of pull over. For the guys I would bring a flannel or also some type of pull over.

Adventure Tips for Your Session

• Bring comfortable shoes for hiking to the best spots.

• Stay hydrated and wear sunscreen.

• Be prepared for Oregon’s very warm summer and bitter winters.

• The trails are very rocky so watch your step! In the winter and spring you can expect mud!

Stay on the trails, smith rock is becoming more and more of an attraction for many reasons, especially for photoshoots. There are so many beautiful spots for pictures that don't require you needing to disrupt the nature and wild life there. Photographers will get fined for going off trail for photos. As of now there is no permit required for regular sessions, so lets please respect our park and keep it that way!
